Summer Family Evening 2018

Summer Family Evening 2018

Our annual Summer Family Evening incorporating the Group’s AGM will be held on Friday 8th June.

The event kicks-off from 6pm with a BBQ on the forecourt and drinks served upstairs in the meeting hall.

Presentations by the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts will start at 6:30pm sharp followed by 15 minutes (max!) of formalities. We’ll conclude with some awards presentations, then it’s over to you all to enjoy refreshments and socialise with fellow parents and members of the Group.

Everyone is welcome – parents, carers, grandparents, siblings, friends, leaders, all group members and others from our local community. Please do join us for what we hope to be a really enjoyable social evening.

RSVP online using this form: http://bit.ly/7thBristol2018

We look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible!

Review of our winter 2017 events – a very busy term!

Review of our winter 2017 events – a very busy term!

It’s been a VERY busy month or two of events and activities at 7th Bristol!

Remembrance Sunday

First we had the lovely Remembrance Sunday parade and service. This was almost certainly the best-attended in our history and a sight to behold as our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts paraded through the Village along with the Rainbows, Brownies and Guides. The service itself was incredibly moving as the wonderful bugler called the Last Post to perfection.

Johnny (Grey Wolf) and a couple of young Beavers assistants absolutely ROCKED the outdoor coffee stall, serving hot drinks to passers-by and those attending the event, while the Guides team did a sterling job as always – serving up hot bacon rolls. Yummy!

Co-op Community Causes Day

Next up, a large group of 7th members descended on Co-op Clifton Village to collect our award of over £2,400 in funding from the Co-op’s Local Community Causes Fund. Co-op chose 7th Bristol to receive a share of the 1% of customer donations, for which we are incredibly grateful. This money will go towards upcoming renovation work at Pavey House, particularly the provision of accessible toilet facilities at ground floor level. I don’t think Karin at the Co-op could quite believe her eyes when we all turned up! It was a fabulous occasion. THANK YOU CO-OP!

Guiding & Scouting Christmas Bazaar

The same day was the Guiding and Scouting Christmas Bazaar at Pavey House. We were in the festive mood with mulled wine, turkey, stuffing & cranberry rolls, plus more cakes than Great British Bake Off! There were festive games and craft activities plus ‘Santa’ flew in on his skip on his sleigh for a jolly visit, and was an instant hit with the young ones. He was a funny-looking chap, but the hair was spot-on the right colour 😉
The bazaar raised money for Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and Guides, Brownies, Rainbows to use for activities they’re planning in 2018.

Cubs Fire Station Visit

Finally, Cubs visited Patchway Fire Station earlier this month to learn about what to do in a fire and to hear how the firemen tackled blazes. They all got a chance to spray the hose too! Thanks to Cubs leaders for organising, and parents for braving the rush-hour schlep over to Patchway.

Coming up soon…

Christmas Party and Sleepover is coming up on 15th December. Then in the New Year it won’t be long until we’re in the run-up to Easter and our first Group event of the year; an Easter Egg Hunt on 25th March 2018. Stay tuned for information coming next year.

Finally, below are the 2017 Group photos for your photo albums, taken at the Remembrance Sunday event. Enjoy! Links to hi-res printable versions are here and here.

Merry Christmas to everyone, and a very Happy New Year.

Carlton,
Group Chairman

Please join us for a family-friendly Remembrance Sunday ceremony

7th Bristol Scouts, Cubs and Beavers will be joining with local Guides, Brownies and Rainbows together with members of the local community and Royal British Legion and for a short ceremony to mark Remembrance Sunday on 12th November.

The service takes place by the War Memorial at the end of Birdcage Walk at the site of the former St. Andrew’s church. A map of the location is below.

We invite everyone to join us from 1:00pm at our Scout HQ, Pavey House on Waterloo Street in Clifton Village where we will be running a quality coffee stall (outside) and the Guides will be serving bacon sandwiches (inside). From there everyone will congregate at around 1:40pm to parade down to the War Memorial (~10 minute walk) ready for the ceremony start at 2pm.st-andrew-stone-17130-200

All are very welcome.

Important information for 7th Bristol members:

Please try to make every effort to attend as it’s a really great local event to support and to remember those who gave so much so that we enjoy our lives today.

**Plus there will be a very special commemorative badge given only to 7th young people and leaders who attend this event in uniform. Don’t miss out!**

All members of 7th Bristol (young people, leaders, parents and family) are requested to meet at the Scout HQ, Pavey House, promptly at 1:00pm as we will be taking our annual Group photograph. We reinstated this long-held tradition last year for the first time in many years! It is important that your Beavers, Cubs and Scouts attend as this helps document their scouting experience and our history as a Group (one of the oldest – if not the oldest –in Bristol) and is an interesting snapshot of social history. Have a look at the three photos below from the 1940s, 1950s and 2016.

One of our Assistant Beaver Leaders, Johnny Palmer, is very kindly operating a quality coffee stall outside Pavey House, raising funds for an exciting future Beaver outing and to help towards the cost of buying the Remembrance Day badges. Get yourselves a lovely hot drink on arrival to keep warm!

In addition, the Guides and Brownies will be serving hot bacon sandwiches upstairs in the hall as a fundraiser for a future guiding activity. They too would be very grateful for your custom. The sandwiches they served last year were delicious!

Please feel free to invite any friends and family. They are very welcome to join us from 1:00pm at Pavey House and be part of the memorial service.

Please note that this is not a “drop off” event and a parent or guardian will need to attend unless you have made special arrangements with your Leaders.

At approximately 1:40pm we will assemble outside Pavey House and walk in procession with our respective section flags to the War Memorial in plenty of time for the ceremony. We are very privileged to be safely marshalled this year by members of the Student Scout and Guide Organisation, which has been kindly organised by the Guide leaders. The service starts at 2pm and is very short – 20 mins at most – finished by 2.30pm at the latest.

We will not all return to Pavey House as it is anticipated that you will depart immediately following the service with your children, unless you have made special alternative arrangements with your Leaders.

Please can everyone attend looking smart in full uniform, neatly folded scarf, woggle, dark coloured school type trousers (no jeans) and smart shoes (no trainers). Get your recent badges sewn or glued on! If possible, please wear a poppy too.

Young people who are not yet invested (i.e. no scarf, woggle or badges) should also attend wearing their shirts/jumpers.

The ceremony will take place whatever the weather so please come prepared!

Please note: there will be NO PARKING available in the spaces immediately in front of Pavey House on this occasion due to the coffee stall, Group photo, and anticipated number of participants.

Long Service Awards

Long Service Awards

Several of the 7th Bristol leadership team have recently received Long Service Awards.

The recipients are as follows:

5 Year Long Service Award:

  • Alex Punter (Assistant Cub Scout Leader)
  • Leza Jagroop (ex-Beaver Scout Leader, now Executive Committee member)
  • Peter Newbery (Group Treasurer)

10 Year Long Service Award:

  • Lysa Webb (Assistant Scout Leader)

40 Year Long Service Award:

  • Steve Bennett (Scout Leader)

Steve Bennett (known as ‘Silver’ to the Scouts) has been a Leader for a continuous period of 40 years. This, we believe, is quite an unusual and extraordinary achievement because he has been ‘at the coalface’ working directly with the young people throughout this period rather than ‘in the background’ in an administrative or District capacity. Well done and congratulations Steve!

District Commissioner Chris Gavriel handed out the awards during his recent visit to the Group, and Group Scout Leader Alastair Iles re-presented two of the awards on Monday evening in front of the admiring Scouts.

We thank all these wonderful volunteers for the time they freely dedicate to provide scouting to our young people.
