Friends, family and fellow scouters gathered at The Beehive in Henleaze to celebrate Michael Keefe’s incredible achievement of over 70 years scouting with 7th Bristol Scout Group. Mike joined 7th Bristol as a Cub at the age of 8, became a Leader at 18, and has been a driving force of the 7th Group ever since. Today Mike is the President of the Group.
During the celebration Group Scout Leader, Alastair Iles, delivered a touching tribute to Mike on behalf of 7th Bristol. Al presented a slideshow of Mike’s involvement with the 7th over the years, including some of his significant achievements. Al thanked him for his amazing work for the Group and the young people.
Al was followed by Carlton Jefferis, Group Chairman, who presented Mike an original 1971 Ladybird book of Scouts (in case he needed a refresher course!).
Chris Gavriel, Cabot District Commissioner, then spoke of Mike’s long-standing commitment to scouting as a volunteer, and paid gratitude to Mike’s family for the supportive role they have played.
Al was then asked to present Mike with the 60 Years Service Award, marking 60 years since becoming a leader in 1955.
The event culminated with an entertaining talk by Prof. John Kirwan, Cabot District Chairman, who presented Mike with a painting specially commissioned by 7th Bristol. The watercolour ‘Scouting at Stiles’, by local artist Caroline James, depicts scout camp activities at the 7th Bristol campsite ‘Stiles’ which Mike was instrumental in acquiring in the 1980s.
The evening was a wonderful scouting occasion full of memories, achievements and laughter.
